Proton VPN

Proton VPN is a Swiss-based VPN provider with a large server network and strong privacy credentials. Wirebump handles session management, server selection, and credential storage automatically.

  • Jurisdiction: Switzerland (strong privacy laws)
  • Server network: 3000+ servers across 70+ countries
  • Protocol: WireGuard
  • Audits: Independent security audits published regularly

Proton VPN works seamlessly with all Wirebump topologies: single-hop, parallel, nested, and hybrid configurations.

Proton VPN servers tend to have better IP reputation than other VPN providers. This means:

  • Fewer CAPTCHAs when browsing
  • Less likely to be blocked by websites that aggressively filter VPN traffic
  • Generally smoother browsing experience

Proton VPN has significantly better streaming service compatibility than Mullvad VPN. If you need to access geo-restricted streaming content, Proton VPN exits are more likely to work without issues.

  1. Open the Wirebump web UI
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Find the VPN Providers section
  4. Click Add Proton VPN Account
  5. Enter your Proton VPN credentials

Wirebump stores credentials locally on the device. They never leave your hardware.

After adding your account, Wirebump handles:

  • Session authentication with Proton VPN servers
  • Automatic session refresh when tokens expire
  • Server list updates and availability checking

Choose servers by city and country when building circuits:

  • Major cities have multiple servers available
  • The circuit builder shows server availability in real time
  • Select specific exit locations for geo-unlocking or latency optimization

Wirebump manages the WireGuard configuration automatically. No manual config file downloads.

Proton VPN uses standard WireGuard without additional processing overhead:

  • No containerized mode required
  • Native WireGuard performance on your hardware
  • Full throughput across parallel connections

This makes Proton VPN a good choice for high-throughput needs where you want maximum speed without additional container overhead.

Wirebump supports adding multiple Proton VPN accounts. Use cases:

  • Split knowledge: Different accounts for entry and exit hops. The entry account sees your IP but not your destination. The exit account sees your destination but not your IP.
  • Separate circuits: Dedicated accounts for different topologies or use cases.
  • Redundancy: Failover to a secondary account if one has issues.

For split knowledge configurations, combine Proton VPN with Mullvad VPN accounts, or use multiple Proton VPN accounts across different subscription tiers.
